17.5m PilotCat – Design #234
This design has taken up the bulk of 2022 so far. It was originally conceived and put out to tender by the customer (Northland Regional Council) and Lighthouse Naval Architects as a replacement for the existing 20 year old NRC Pilot Vessel. The collaboration between DVDesign and Circa Marine Ltd was awarded the tender to design and construct this vessel earlier in 2022.
As such it was not our job to significantly change the original concept but what we have done is optimise the hull (seakeeping, CFD, structure etc) as far as possible within the configuration and parameters set by the customer.
In NZ the regional councils manage the coastline and harbours in each particular area. At 3200 km the Northland region coastline is the second longest in New Zealand. There are 10 natural harbours from the Kaipara on the SW coast around Cape Reinga to Mangawhai in the SE. There are also countless bays, inlets and estuaries along this stunning coastline and the word “countless” is by no means an exaggeration! So this vessel has extensive operational range to cover.
In addition to as acting as a pilot vessel for the busy Bay of Islands area, this vessel will also be utilised for search and recovery, diving operations and as a general workboat etc. The boat is being designed and will be built to full MNZ Part 40C survey for Coastal Limits.
