78 foot Aluminium Performance Voyaging Catamaran – Design #167
This design was commissioned in 2016 but regrettably the customer canned the project in favour of the quick fix of buying a second-hand boat.
Nevertheless the central theme of a larger, performance-oriented version of our 62’ Aluminium Cat design remains valid. The resulting preliminary design reveals a relatively light and nimble performance voyaging vessel.
Construction will be high-strength Alustar alloy to maximise sailing efficiency by keeping the vessel as light as possible. Although twin aft helming positions are shown on the general arrangement we believe that this size of catamaran is imminently suited to a forward sailing-cockpit with the aft deck devoted to outdoor lounging and dining.
Further refinements would include increasing the aft deck lounge area, increasing the solar array on the deckhouse roof as well as adjusting the interior layout. A ketch rig would also suit a cat of this this size, keeping the individual sail areas down to more manageable size as well as lowering the centre of effort.
Properly sailed in the right conditions this vessel should be quite capable of averaging 300 to 400 nautical miles per day. This is an exciting design which is waiting for the right person to take the helm!
