13m Steel Cruising Cutter – Design #047

This is one of my favourite designs for reasons other than it’s a great design. First of all the boat was built in Brazil in a really small town up a river. Secondly the American/Brazilian owners turned out to be a really great couple including naming the boat after a U2 song! Not so sure how the boat would have turned out if not for the fact that the builders needed the owner’s help translating the plans from English to Portuguese. As soon as the boat was launched they departed on a round the world voyage (and won the cruising division in an ocean race along the way), which ultimately ended in after Tahiti and then California when the family started to grow and priorities changed!
The boat languished in California for a few years and was then purchased by another great couple, seriously capable and hardy sailors, who have cruised Alaska for the past couple of years. By this I mean cruising in an Alaskan winter which is clearly not for the faint-hearted. Keep up with the travels of Chad and Carolyn on our Facebook page at De Villiers Marine Design | Facebook.
